Cocoa Touch Apps on Twitter

We don’t always have time to write out a full-fledged CTA review, but we still want to keep our readers in the loop with all things Cocoa Touch…

In an effort to still squeeze a little blogging into our already jam-packed lives, we’ll be doing updates via twitter. We’ve been on twitter for over a month now, but haven’t actually set it up to push live updates to the site until now.

iPhone OS 3.0 appears to be working out pretty well – news did come out today about a vulnerability in the SMS program that allows a hacker to enable such things as GPS location, the microphone and other creepy stuff… It appears as though Apple already has a fix in the works… will probably roll out that as well as some hot new features in 3.1

So far you can expect new voice control compatibility with bluetooth connections… finally voice-dailing for people who have expensive cars. (Not me) If you edit a video you took with your 3GS – it won’t kill whatever you cut… it offers to create a new version…

Other things of note in 3.1 – the phone vibrates when moving icons… ummm, I’m actually not excited about that. I think it’s just a waste of my battery. I already see the icons dance, why vibrate my phone? Boot times are quicker – which means that Apple has actually taken some time to optimize the OS a bit… kind of like Snow Leopard – due out this September.

Lastly, this one is cool… Apple has actually opened up the video APIs so that a developer could write an app that will give you more editing abilities than just trimming in Apple’s editor. Practical, no – but if someone writes the software, I could create a whole movie with my iPhone.

For our unlock followers – as always stay away from everything new until you’ve checked with our friends on the Dev Team.

Enable Emoji on iPhone OS 2.2.1

Emoji

There has been quite the buzz around the iPhone world with the introduction of emoji enabling applications in the US App Store.  The first app to enable emoji was FrostyPlace (Link opens iTunes).   The biggest problem came with the iPhone OS 2.2.1 update that broke the hidden feature of this app for anyone who hadn’t enabled it.  FrostyPlace promised to get an app into the App Store to fix this but has yet to deliver.  Since that time, several other developers have taken it upon themselves to fill the void.  We used Typing Genius (Link opens iTunes) to enable emoji and it worked like a dream.  To follow suit, download Typing Genius, run the app, close it, go to the settings app, tap general, tap keyboard, then international keyboards, japanese, and then turn on emoji.  Seems like a lot, but it’s really easy and adds some cool features to your keyboard.

What is emoji?  It’s a Japanese character set that’s very much like emoticons and is a standard among japanese phones.  That being a japanese standard, it’s not enabled on american phones and there are strict requirements for it to work.  First, it only works on iPhones or iPod Touches.  Second, the both mobile devices must be running 2.2 or later.  Both devices don’t need to have emoji enabled to see the messages, but it’s definitely something that most users will want after they see the characters.  The catch, if you send a text with emoji to another iPhone user that isn’t up to the latest firmware, it will not go through.  They will receive nothing and you won’t find out if they liked your smiley face.

Anyways, take a look at the gallery and see what is offered with emoji.  It’s stupid but playful and I can’t wait to mess with my wife. ;)
