You make a good point... I'd love to believe that you're way off. But I agree that many companies deliberately withhold features to make the second revision more attractive. Apple hasn't been guilty of this that I'm aware of at least -- the lack of a camera in the iPod touch does make me pause for a second.

I've heard from the inside that Apple withholds things from a product in order to just push it through and start selling it quicker. For example, the iTunes music store was supposed to be in the first generation iPhone from the beginning, but they didn't have the bugs worked out so they postponed the release until later.

My inner Apple fanboy doesn't want to believe that they would deliberately mess with us like that.

You seem to be missing one of the possibilities here, that Apple have designed the part for the future addition of a camera.

It makes perfect sense to me, since Apple will want to keep parts the same if possible. Why have two versions of the bezel for the first and second generation iPad? If they ship the first one with the camera mount in place but don't actually add the camera until next years model. They save themselves money in all sorts of areas.

I'm a bit annoyed at the business model anyway, lots of companies do this now. They deliberately hold back on features for a future version, what ever happened to genuine innovation and improvement?
